Das theoretische Interesse von Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels sowie der meisten ihrer Nachfolger galt den Strukturen der Gesellschaft sowie ihrer historischen Entwicklung; ihr praktisches Interesse galt der politischen Überwindung des Kapitalismus. In diesem Kontext widmeten Marx und Engels dem Phänomen ›Technik‹ beginnend mit den Ökonomisch-philosophischen Manuskripten bis zum Kapital und darüber hinaus erhebliche Aufmerksamkeit. Eine selbständige Technikphilosophie gehörte allerdings nicht zu ihrem Programm und erst recht keine Technikethik. Das zeigt sich schon daran, dass von ›Technik‹ oder ›Technologie‹ bei ihnen (...) eher selten die Rede ist; stattdessen aber von ›Werkzeug‹, ›Maschine‹, ›Produktivkraft‹ oder ›Kapital‹. (shrink)

This exercise requires students—particularly in Introduction to Philosophy courses—to use Internet chatrooms in an “agonistic” fashion,actively seeking out others with whom to argue. Generally using topics in applied ethics, students develop skills in articulating their positions, providing evidence to support those positions, and presenting arguments. These Internet exchanges have resulted in improvement in students’ critical thinking skills, writing, and classroom discussion, and have revealed the value of defending a position with a dispassionate, well-reasoned argument.

Background: We previously showed, by means of an online-based survey, that the belief of being infected by coronavirus disease 2019 acted as a nocebo and predicted higher perception of symptoms similar to COVID-19 symptoms. However, there is little known about the psychological mechanisms that give rise to beliefs such as certainty of being infected by COVID-19, and this was investigated in the present study.Objective: Using the same data from the previous online survey with the same research team, we further investigated (...) whether certainty of being infected by COVID-19 is associated with age, sex, health anxiety, and/or personality traits.Methods: Respondents filled out an online survey with 57 questions about symptoms similar to COVID-19, certainty of being infected by COVID-19, anxiety, stress, health anxiety, and personality dimensions.Results: Higher levels of conscientiousness and health anxiety were independently associated with certainty of being infected by COVID-19. The model predicted 29% of the variance in certainty of being infected by COVID-19.Conclusion: Being conscientious and worried about health issues were associated with the belief of being infected by COVID-19. Such finding may have implications for health care personnel who provide COVID-19 testing or consulting services to general population, as individuals high in these traits may over-report COVID-like symptoms. Theoretically, these findings point to psychological factors that may increase nocebo and possibly placebo effects. Clinically, the findings suggest that individuals high in conscientiousness and health anxiety may be more likely to over-report their bodily experiences. (shrink)

Internalism holds that epistemic justification is determined by what is internal to the mind, not by facts about the mind-independent world. This paper introduces and defends a new kind of internalism that is rooted in rationalist ideas that have been neglected in recent epistemology, despite inspiring internalist projects in cognitive science. Ignoring rationalist insights has, I argue, damaged the prospects for internalism, by needlessly saddling internalists with empiricist burdens. Internalists can refuse these burdens by accepting a better philosophy of mind. (...) Rather than looking to 17th century rationalists, I look to Kant, and especially his idea that normativity is grounded in the constitution of agency and mind. A Kantian approach can avoid stock objections to internalism, I argue, and can also capture all the alleged benefits of externalism. The paper is structured as follows. In §2, I get back to basics and consider more ways to satisfy the core internalist template than have become standard. I draw attention to rationalist insights about how normativity could be grounded in the constitution of mind, and hypothesize that if internalism respects these insights, some problems disappear. I develop this hypothesis in §3 with a Kantian view. I further defend this view in §4. I conclude in §5 by explaining why Kantian internalism answers the latest challenges to internalism. (shrink)

Expressed emotion is a measure of the family environment that has been demonstrated to be a reliable, cross-culturally valid psychosocial predictor of relapse in patients with schizophrenia, mood disorders, and other — also somatic — illnesses. Assessed during the Camberwell Family Interview CFI, relatives are classified as being high in EE if they make more than a specified threshold number of critical comments or show any signs of hostility or marked emotional overinvolvement. In schizophrenia, the median relapse rate for patients (...) returning after hospital discharge to a high EE environment is 48%, compared with 21% in a low EE-environment. In this article, the history of EE research will be outlined, and the evidence for the association between family EE and the course of schizophrenia and mood disorders will be presented. Conclusions about the treatment of major mental disorders are discussed as well as the directions of future studies. (shrink)

Von Kants Vernunftrecht ausgehend, gelangt die Betrachtung unter Berucksichtigung von Stammlers Lehre vom Richtigen Recht und Kelsens Normenhierarchie zu der Einsicht, das Recht konne nur begriffen werden, wenn es auf Handlungsstrukturen abgebildet werde. Unter diesem Aspekt erweist sich die Frage nach dem Richtigen Recht als Scheinproblem.".

Ausgehend von Kant, wird der Charakter der Jurisprudenz als Wissen- schaft für die beiden Hauptgebiete des Rechts, Zivilrecht und öffent- liches Recht, getrennt dargestellt und zwar im Zivilrecht anhand der Strukturtheorie des Rechts von Kempskis und im öffentlichen Recht durch den eigenen Versuch der «festgeschriebenen Politiktheorie».
